The mainland’s AI video-generation market is forecast to reach 9.3 billion yuan by 2026, up from just 8 million yuan in 2021, according to research firm LeadLeo. OpenAI has blocked access to its products on the mainland, Hong Kong and Macau.

The capabilities of Jimeng, however, appear uneven, based on a test run by the Post.

A text prompt to generate a woman – carrying a black bag and wearing dark glasses, a black leather jacket and red dress – walking at night in a Tokyo street resulted in a three-second video clip in which the woman’s face appeared distorted as she looked left, while her right foot did not make a step forward.

Another test run with a prompt for several giant woolly mammoths treading through a snowy meadow generated an undisrupted three-second video.
