Donkey Prices in Pakistan Rise Due to High Demand for Cosmetic Products – Startup Pakistan

The price of donkeys in Pakistan has seen a sharp increase, with some now selling for as much as PKR 300,000. This surge in prices is largely due to rising demand from China, where donkey hides are highly valued.

These hides are used in the production of cosmetics and a traditional Chinese medicine called “e jia.” This growing demand from China has caused a decline in local buyers at markets like Karachi’s Lehari donkey market, as the high prices are becoming unaffordable for many.

Sellers explain that China’s increasing need for donkey hides has turned donkeys into a valuable commodity. Exporters are especially benefiting, as they meet the demands of the Chinese market by selling hides for use in various products, particularly cosmetics and traditional medicine.

This trend has shifted the donkey trade in Pakistan, with the animals becoming more profitable for those looking to cater to international markets. However, it also means that local buyers and traders are facing challenges in keeping up with the soaring prices.
